Applies in England only
What Band 3 Includes
Band 3 is the most expensive NHS dental charge and covers complex treatments that require laboratory work. This includes crowns, dentures, and bridges. As with other bands, you pay a single charge for the entire course of treatment. If you need two crowns and a partial denture, you pay £319.10 once, not per item. The materials used will be clinically appropriate but may not include the most cosmetic options available privately.
What Band 3 Does NOT Include
Band 3 vs Private: Where You Save the Most
Band 3 represents the biggest potential saving compared to private treatment. Here's why:
- A single NHS crown costs £319.10. Privately, a crown costs £400-£1,200
- Full dentures on the NHS: £319.10. Privately: £500-£2,500
- A bridge on the NHS: £319.10. Privately: £700-£2,000 per unit
- Need multiple items? Still £319.10 total on the NHS
If you need two crowns and a partial denture, your NHS bill is £319.10. Privately, the same work could easily cost £2,000-£4,000. Band 3 is where the NHS banding system offers the greatest value for money.
Materials: NHS vs Private
The main trade-off with NHS Band 3 treatment is in the materials used. NHS crowns are typically made from metal or metal-fused-to-porcelain. Private dentists may offer all-ceramic or zirconia crowns which look more natural but cost significantly more.
NHS dentures are functional and well-made but use standard acrylic. Private dentures may use premium materials like chrome cobalt or flexible nylon, and offer more natural-looking teeth.
What About Dental Implants?
Dental implants are very rarely available on the NHS. They may be provided when conventional treatments (bridges, dentures) are unsuitable due to:
- Significant facial trauma
- Oral cancer treatment affecting the jaw
- Congenital conditions (teeth that never developed)
- Severe bone loss making dentures impossible
In most cases, dental implants are a private treatment costing £2,000-£5,000 per implant. Your NHS dentist can refer you if they believe you have an exceptional clinical need.
Remember: You only pay Band 3 once, even if you need multiple crowns, a bridge, and fillings in the same course of treatment. The £319.10 charge covers everything.
